For 20 years Sierant company has been specializing in manufacturing venetian blinds.

The most popular light breaker

French word for venetian blind – "la jalousie" - means jealousy. This non-accidental play on words points to the most important function of the most popular window covering – to protect our privacy from jealous eyes. In the 80’s in Poland venetian blinds were very popular (especially the early model made of unpainted and a little inelegant aluminium) and it showed that the owner had a better material status and was conscious of the current trends. Ventian blinds could be found everywhere: in houses, offices, administration buildings, doctors’ offices and many other places. Nowadays venetian blinds is not only made of different types of aluminium (available in rich variety of colours) but also of wood, bamboo or fabric.

Sierant company manufactures 15 types of venetian blinds. The differences between them are:

  • ways of operation (by cord, tilt wand, chain or electric motor)
  • width of the slats (16mm, 25mm and 50mm)
  • application (different types of windows: from standard to non-standard windows)
  • wais of installation within window frame (surface or interpane blinds)
  • way of manufacturing the head rail (and its internal measurements: like 25mm x 25mm)

The common function of all the types of the venetian blinds is to protect the windows from the negative influence of sunlight (bothersome reflections and glare) and extensive heating (changing the angle of the slats allows to adjust the amount of light)

History of the mobile curtain

Venetian blinds (earlier: window covers) have been used for decades or even for centuries. They didn’t have the contemporary form but they had the same destination. Desert inhabitants used wet clothes to cover the windows of their shelters. It provided additional cooling of the interiors (which reminds contemporary air condition). Ancient Egyptians used reed bound together to protect their windows from curious eyes. Chinese covered their windows with bamboo stalks (solution still popular in Asia countries). Horizontal blinds (venetian blinds) were in fact invented in Persia, Venetian merchants who travelled to distant countries brought them from Persia to Europe and because of that were considered to be the inventors of this way of window covering. Venetian blinds became so popular that they were used in painting as one of the details used for filling the background. (Berthe Morisot Behind the blinds). In film and literature they became the metaphor of mystery. An In the novel "Jealousy" ("La Jalousie") by Alain Robbe-Grillet the protagonist from behind the blind observes a peculiar love intrigue. In the thriller "The Conversation" directed by Francis Ford Coppola venetian blind is a very important prop. In the 50-ies’ venetian blinds were made of metal slats, 50 mm wide, hung on a ladder cord made of fabric. Those models were noisy and not aesthetical . The blossom of venetian blinds falls on the 80-s’, because it is when they were used not only in functional purposes but also as an important decorative element of different interiors.
